IBAN Validator

Paste any IBAN to verify its country, length, structure and check digits: with a full component breakdown.

Check an IBAN

Validation runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded.

How this tool works

This tool is designed for testing, education and workflow prototyping. It validates or generates structurally correct values based on published format rules and clearly states where no live-bank lookup is performed.

How IBAN validation works

What this validator checks

The tool checks all four essentials: country code, total length, BBAN pattern and MOD-97 checksum. That makes the output much more useful than a checksum-only validator.

What does IBAN validation check?

A proper IBAN check runs four independent tests. Our validator performs all of them instantly:

  1. Country recognition: the first two letters must be a country in the official IBAN registry (89 supported).
  2. Length check: every country has an exact IBAN length (Germany: 22, France: 27, Norway: 15). One character off means invalid.
  3. BBAN structure: the national part must match the country’s format: digits, letters, or alphanumeric in the right positions.
  4. mod-97 checksum: the two check digits must satisfy the ISO 13616 algorithm. This helps detect common transcription errors.

What validation cannot tell you

Format validation confirms an IBAN is well-formed: it cannot confirm the account exists, is open, or belongs to a particular person. Only the recipient’s bank can do that. Treat a “valid” result as “worth sending to the bank’s own verification,” not as proof of a live account.

When to validate

  • Before submitting SEPA transfers, payroll runs, or supplier payments.
  • In your own apps: validate client-side for instant feedback, then again server-side.
  • When cleaning imported customer or vendor master data in bulk.

Frequently asked questions

No. Validation runs 100% in your browser with JavaScript. Your IBAN never leaves your device.
Not necessarily. This checks registered format, BBAN structure and checksum only. Account existence can only be confirmed through live bank verification.
The most common cause is a missing or extra character: often from copy-paste. Each country has an exact length (e.g. 22 for Germany and the UK, 27 for France and Italy).
The ISO 13616 algorithm behind IBAN check digits: rearrange the IBAN, convert letters to numbers (A=10…Z=35), and verify the remainder mod 97 equals 1. It catches single-digit errors and most transpositions.
Testing and educational use. Generated identifiers are synthetic and are not checked against live bank directories. A randomly generated value can coincidentally resemble or match a real identifier. Never use generated data for real payments, account applications, identity verification, or to represent a real person or institution.
